Shaping the future of elderly care

Together with Woonzorg Flevoland, Bit explored how the care sector can prepare for the growing pressure of an ageing population by using prototypes to identify pain points and design a five-year roadmap for sustainable care.

Understanding the challenge

Woonzorg Flevoland faces the same challenge as many care organisations in the Netherlands: the ageing population is growing fast. In the coming years, many more elderly people will need intensive care in nursing homes. At the same time, the number of trained caregivers is not increasing.

If we project this trend to 2030, the current way of working will no longer be possible. With today’s staff, the level of care that residents now receive cannot be maintained in the future.

The question is urgent:

How can care organisations continue to deliver high-quality care with fewer hands available?

Making a long-lasting impact

Bit worked with Woonzorg Flevoland to analyse this challenge in depth. Instead of starting with reports and theory, we built tangible prototypes that brought the daily pain points to life. These prototypes helped to visualise where the pressure is highest and what solutions could make a real difference.

From there, we created a roadmap for the next five years. This roadmap shows how Woonzorg Flevoland can adapt step by step. Introducing smarter tools, new ways of working, and collaborations across the care sector. It also makes clear what needs to start now in order to be ready for 2030, ensuring that residents continue to receive the same quality of care in the future.

Results

The impact went beyond analysis.

  • Prototypes that spark dialogue — concrete concepts made the future challenges visible and discussable.

  • A clear roadmap — outlining how to move from today’s situation to a sustainable care model in 2030.

  • Collaboration and awareness — an event with partners in the sector created momentum and opened the door to new cooperation.

  • Sustainable care vision — Woonzorg Flevoland now has a shared foundation to guide decisions in the coming years.

By turning complex challenges into tangible prototypes, Woonzorg Flevoland and Bit created not only insights, but also a conversation starter for the entire care industry.
